TLT: Transcranial Laser Therapy offers new hope for PTSD.
PTSD affects millions of wounded warriors and civilians. PTSD can occur from both mental and physical trauma. In a high-stress event, the limbic system goes into high gear. The amygdala takes over command and control and the brain becomes hyper-aroused. The brain is determined to survive at all cost; fight or flight. In most people, the brain returns to its normal state over time. However, in PTSD the brain is permanently rewired. The amygdala remains hyperactive with hyper aroused states. The prefrontal cortex physically shrinks. The result is profound sleep disturbance, suicidal thoughts and depression.
TLT or transcranial laser therapy offers new hope for PTSD. TLT uses high-intensity laser light to stimulate ATP in targeted brain areas, concentrating on the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex becomes physically less depressed and more energized which results in normalization of the amygdala. TLT is a new method of using an FDA-cleared, high-powered medical laser. Treatments take 5 to 20 minutes per area, and 10 to 20 total sessions.
In a recent scientific report of 4 patients with PTSD and TBI, and 6 patients with TBI without PTSD, TLT was remarkably effective. Suicidal thoughts which occurred in 5 of the PTSD patients before treatment dropped to 0 after treatment. Anxiety disorder, which occurred in 9 of the patients before treatment dropped to 0 patients after treatment. Sleep disturbance or nightmares which affected all 10 patients, after treatment dropped to 0. Depression decreased by 80% or by 50% depending on the scale used; either the QIDS or BDI scales. Employment improved – 6 patients of the 10 were unemployed before treatment and after treatment, 5 of those were gainfully employed.
